Not a bad question
Here's a howler out of Salem. One of the Republicans in the legislature had the nerve to ask how come the state gives so much money to the Oregon Food Bank when that outfit has turned into a far-left propaganda machine. Of course, said lawmaker was immediately shouted down. The ACLU was there to lecture everyone on how the Food Bank has the right to engage in the democratic process.
But the funniest part was when the new head honcho of the Food Bank got up and pointed out that they spend only $3 million a year on politics.
Only.
Williams brought printed copies of the food bank’s annual financial audits, which are also on its website. In 2023, for instance, the Oregon Food Bank reported spending more than $90 million on food programs and $3 million on advocacy, out of a nearly $112 million total budget. It received more than $20 million in government funding, including the federal Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Oregon Hunger Response Fund. None of that government funding was used for advocacy, Williams said.
Money is fungible, friends.
The OFB changed executive directors lately, but it's pretty clear that they're doubling down on their habit of spending donors' money preaching about Gaza, drug decriminalization, colonialism, homeless sweeps, and whatever other cause pops into their heads. They're no longer just fighting hunger, you see, they're also fighting the causes of hunger, which are just about every perceived injustice you can name.
Anyway, I applaud the MAGA dude who piped up and raised the question. I needed a chuckle this week.
Are not most NGO (nonprofits) a back door to socialism?
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't know "socialism" from a mop bucket.
DeleteSocialism is just a lable for free market contempt.
DeleteAhh, I don’t think you know what the “socialism” means. LOL
DeleteScrew that outfit. What a scam.
ReplyDeleteDecades ago, charities were often run by volunteers. (no paychecks) Their only interest was helping the fragile. Most NGOs today are scams that milk the public money machine.
ReplyDeleteKeep that same energy for the 'school choice' scam, fellas. We'll all get along just fine.
ReplyDeleteBecause our public school monopoly is performing so well?
DeleteI'm an atheist living in a top five performing school district, but if my kids were entering high school today I'd probably send them to a parochial school.
Two Portland school teachers live in my neighborhood. Their children attend private schools.
DeleteI stopped giving them money because of their politics. Also the Audubon because they spent so much time and energy changing their name. It is easy and safe to criticize the past but not very useful.
ReplyDeleteFiscal responsibiliy is apparently neither a Republican or Democratic concern.
ReplyDeleteIf your a fiscal republican your a Nazi and if your a fiscal democrat, Morroccan pottery classes were for folx!
DeleteIsn’t it kinda pathetic the constant attempts to tarnish anybody who was an America, or any world history that looks favorably on people of a certain race? And at the same time celebrate the most obscure people from different races who are completely obscure. And for a good reason?
ReplyDeleteNaw.
DeleteI strongly encourage everyone to NOT donate to the Oregon Food Bank, and instead donate to your local food bank in your neighborhood or town. There are many, many small food banks that actually help people without all the nonsense, crazy salaries, and politics.
ReplyDeleteRemember when NYT columnist Nick Kristof was running for governor and idly mentioned that it might be a good idea to audit the state's nonprofits? Soon after Shemia Fagan bumped him off the ballot.
ReplyDeleteLesson: Don't mess with the machine's money laundries.
I’m happy to hear that Nick is considering a run again, now that he fully meets residency requirements. Crooked Fagan really played dirty last time with the nonsense she pulled. I think Nick would have an excellent shot at beating Kotek in the primary.
DeleteIf the money is used to lobby for legislation that helps to feed people, I would think that is within their remit. But promoting gender identity or sexual orientation issues, or other political hot issues, diminishes their donor base and results in their vilification. Ten years ago they were a politically neutral volunteer based public service organization. Then They brought in a CEO with an alternative political agenda based heavily in sexual orientation politics. Then they abandoned the Blues Festival, and demoted the role of volunteers, and many who volunteered there felt they lost their way, and important ties to a bipartisan community. Just hope they can get back to focusing on their primary mission, and restore their trust in the Oregonian community at large. God knows they are going to be needed in the coming years.
ReplyDeleteOFB will not return to its original mission in my lifetime. The food thing is just a front the enables the to solicit money.
DeleteThe normalization of bureaucrats and NGOs using tax dollars to advocate social justice and enrich friends and family has been a very long string of tax money theft. Hate MAGA & DOGE all you want but the exposure underway is undeniable, indefensible and desperately needed to reverse the process that produces the $35 Trillion debt.
ReplyDeleteAs if Trump was actually focused on cutting debt.
DeleteNot sure OFB is to blame for how the game is played these days. Billions were spent on the presidential elections in 2024 alone. Maybe blame campaign finance rules (or lack there of), legality of Super PACs, and non-existent lobbyist oversight. You have to pay to play in American politics.
