Pray for L.A.

It's a dire scene in Los Angeles, with fires raging through neighborhoods on both the west side and the east side. There's a ton of fuel from last winter's rains, and it hasn't rained a drop since May. The Santa Ana winds are going to be going crazy all night. We're talking 80-mile-an-hour stuff. The planes can't operate to fight the flames, and on the ground, it's truly life-threatening. At this point, it's up to the angels for whose queen the city is named.

This is Santa Monica, *south* of San Vicente:

  1. Well that's one way to clean up that dirty town. Nature always bats last. I do hope that those in harm's way can find shelter and not lose everything.

    2. I’m in SoCal at the moment. All the fires are in the hills or close to the hills that surround the LA Basin. These places have regularly burned since I lived here as a kid in the 1960s.

The current spate of fires are driven my unusually high but not uncommon Santa Ana winds. “Fire weather” we used to call it when I was a kid…

    3. P.S. these areas have burned since the sea receded to form what we now know as the LA Basin. The real issue is the stupid people who build expensive houses in these areas.

    4. A lot of the people affected are not rich.

    5. True. Those folks will be out everything. The insurance companies will try to avoid paying claims with horseshit about it being a “wind event” that the homeowner policy doesn’t cover.

After that the city/county/state will condemn the lots to prevent rebuilding…especially if spring rains lead to massive mudslides.

The rich idiots with million -dollar hilltop estates & Pacific views will ALWAYS be allowed to rebuild.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
