Makeup break
The gonifs at Metro, the Extra Layer of Government You Didn't Know You Needed®, have decided not to go to the voters in May to ask for an extension and "tweak" of its economy-sapping homeless "services" income tax, imposed on upper-middle-class and rich people. Now they're talking about a ballot measure in November.
As I recall, the tax is with us until 2030, even without another vote. But apparently the scoundrels want to change the rules so that the tax money can flow directly to the apartment bunker developer weasels. Classic Portland. Apparently that will have to wait, at least another half year.
It's interesting that the Metro bobbleheads don't want a public vote on the proposal right now. That's a sure sign that the pollsters have told them it might fail. And so they need some more time to doll it up and blow more smoke around the blatant, fundamental failures of the tax.
When Portland's progressive tax-lovers foolishly put this gouge before the electorate initially, the idea for a lot of voters was that it would help get the creeps and junkies off the streets. We're something like a billion dollars into the tax now (not an exaggeration), and it hasn't done squat in that regard. When you dig down a little, you learn that a lot of the money's been going to "prevent" homelessness – in other words, to give an increased welfare check to people who currently have a roof over their heads. That might not be a bad idea, but it's not what was being pitched at the outset.
And of course, a lot of the dough goes to pay the mortgages of countless "executive directors" of politically connected "nonprofit community partners." Getting the tent people into shelters hasn't really been part of the program. Maybe the voters have noticed.
There's got to be some serious buyer's remorse on the part of the Subaru suburbanites who fell for this. They're still stepping in bum doo on the walk from the garage to the symphony. But I doubt the "homeless" tax will ever go away. When I gripe about Portland and say I'm going to move because of the taxes, people ask where to, Lake Oswego? And I always tell them heck no, out of Oregon entirely.
North Marion County avoids Metro entirely, but if I need a reminder, I can swing by the heavily subsidized and laughably empty WES train in Wilsonville.420 riders a day at ary$110 each (probably just variable costs, no ROI). Plus, no DEQ for the big farm truck :-)
ReplyDeleteI’ve begun looking at locations in Arizona. The home prices are acceptable and the tax structure is closing the deal. I’m positive that the bobbleheads will create a positive rant about my exit.
ReplyDeleteDepending on where in Arizona, you might run into water scarcity levels. But not the whole state. Good luck - I'm not far behind you.
DeleteIf you mind heat stroke.
DeletePlus, if they went to the voters in May, they'd be competing with the $1.3 B PPS bond measure.
ReplyDeleteGotta pay your "fair share".
DeleteIs there a legal process to sue them for malfeasance (or some other term)? It seems like it is bait and switch, which should be illegal.
ReplyDeleteSo is the additional gas tax, which was supposed to use at least 50% for road repairs.
DeleteYou know you’ve reached a community typing point when your local liberal tax professor is threatening to move out of state over tax policy. Portland and the state of Oregon are tax hells for income producers and employers ( especially compared to the neighborhood….Washington, Idaho and Nevada ) but voters seem uninterested. If you think upcoming local ballot measures are financially insane just wait to see our super majority legislature now in action. The fever won’t break here until Multnomah county voters dramatically change their behavior and Jack and I won’t live that long…..
ReplyDeleteI’m old enough to remember how wonderful the economy was in this are before the radical left got a foothold.
ReplyDeleteI’ve tried to figure out Jack for some time now. He talks like a fiscal conservative, yet votes straight democrat no matter what. Doesn’t seem to realize that’s the definition of something.
ReplyDeleteHe thinks all Republicans are responsible for Trump (who he hates), therefore he only votes for a D.
DeleteI’ve always respected Jack’s integrity. I wish he’d acknowledge the derangement stuff.
DeleteOne can think the local pols are incompetent yet still be able to recognize a deranged Hitler-wannabe.
DeleteHe won't vote for a Republican because of Trump, even if the Republican is a superior candidate.
DeleteI left two years ago.
ReplyDeleteI hit the sweet spot from every angle. The utterly simple beauty and relative safety of my home is unique. Were you to shoplift here almost certainly someone or two would grab you by the ear and march you back to the store. Dopers and bums setting up street encampments? No. I could go on, but I live where adult men and women care about themselves, their families, their community.
I think that they armed to the teeth, too. I know that I am
Funny how the tough guys need to have plenty of ammo.
DeleteIt's just like a Rockwell painting here (except for all the AR15s)
DeleteTough guys only need ammo when multiple anarchist pussy types come at them at once (which is the Portland style). Otherwise, we're happy to go one-on-one if needed.
DeleteSays a guy who is probably afraid to drive in the city. Or parallel park!
DeleteThe only thing preventing a California-style emigration of anyone successful is the 6-percent mortgage and a lousy real estate market.
ReplyDeleteThere are a ton of really nice places to live in this country. Not every city wants to bankrupt its citizens.
A reader writes: I'm so broke, I can't even pay attention.
ReplyDeleteReality- METRO, TriMet and every other government agency in all of Portland & Multnomah county operates with public deceit & ineptness at their core. They are also ALL Democrat, through and through.
ReplyDeleteThey are what happens when Democrats get their way with everything. The collective tax spending level far exceeds most other blue cities of the same size. Where is it all going? Who knows. NONE of our local media is even interested in the spending excess, let alone where it truly goes.
We are witnessing what happens when ALL Republicans are in charge.
