How much would you pay for something you don't really want?
Does $20 million a year sound right?

Light rail has proven to be a good way to spread the misery of urban life. The sales pitch of it being a commuter resource never penciled out.
ReplyDeleteIf Clark County doesn't want to pay for frequent service, then don't run frequent trains over the river to Clark County. If they get tired of having to wait for crowded trains, then tell them to allocate more money to running more frequent service.
ReplyDeleteThis also has the feature of not running empty trains uselessly if the line is under-utilized.
And any cost estimate you have to double to get close to the actual amount. I like the idea of light rail and have been using it for years. The implementation has been lacking with no good way to enforce valid passengers and safe travels. NYC ain't doing too good these days either, so not just Portland experiencing "public" transportation woes.
ReplyDeleteThere's no NGO nonprofit that will make bucks from the bridge so it's not going anywhere.
ReplyDeleteThere's plenty of for-profit entities that stand to make a killing, and they're all part of the so-called "Streetcar Mafia" Goldschmidt political machine - the Hoffman Construction set that gets all the contracts for these types of things.
