Merry Christmas
That night in the fields near Bethlehem some shepherds were guarding their sheep. All at once an angel came down to them from the Lord, and the brightness of the Lord's glory flashed around them. The shepherds were frightened. But the angel said, “Don't be afraid! I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. This very day in King David's hometown a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord. You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay.”
Suddenly many other angels came down from heaven and joined in praising God. They said: “Praise God in heaven! Peace on earth to everyone who pleases God.”
After the angels had left and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about.” They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and they saw the baby lying on a bed of hay.
When the shepherds saw Jesus, they told his parents what the angel had said about him. Everyone listened and was surprised. But Mary kept thinking about all this and wondering what it meant.
As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said.
Maybe it's just me... IMHO, Greek (and Russian) text look SO MUCH MORE elegant compared to Roman text...
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas everyone!
I don't know. "I have good news for you" just doesn't have the same ring to me as "behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy."
ReplyDeleteThis is why I posted the Attic Greek text. If memory serves me correctly, that's the oldest manuscript we've got. It says "ἰδοὺ γὰρ εὐαγγελίζομαι ὑμῖν χαρὰν μεγάλην." Father Eddie Dolan would have us work on that for a while.
ReplyDeleteCould the good Fr Dolan spot a plagiarism from Google translate? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Google does ancient Greek. I'm sure it does modern Greek.
DeleteMy big Christmas wish is that we stop pretending that the Abrahamic religions have any historical basis. We have studied the texts and terrain for decades and decades and I pray to the almighty we wake the freak up and stop pretending these myths are real. The world is on the brink of all out war based on "believers". 2500 years ago is not all that long ago to find real tangible proof and there is none. There is no Nazareth, so they had to make one up, for just one example.
ReplyDeleteI much prefer Bob Uecker’s version of the event:
ReplyDelete“I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Actually, I was born in Illinois. My mother and father were on an oleo margarine run to Chicago back in 1934, because we couldn't get colored margarine in Wisconsin. On the way home, my mother was with child. Me. And the pains started, and my dad pulled off into an exit area, and that's where the event took place. I remember it was a nativity type setting. An exit light shining down. There were three truck drivers there. One guy was carrying butter, one guy had frankfurters, and the other guy was a retired baseball scout who told my folks that I probably had a chance to play somewhere down the line.
I remember it being very cold. It was January. I didn't weigh very much. I think the birth certificate said something like ten ounces. I was very small. And I remember the coldness on my back from the asphalt. And I was immediately wrapped in swaddling clothes and put in the back of a '37 Chevy without a heater.”
Faith is a wonderful word.
