Trouble in the complex
The O reports (behind the Paywall of Pity, alas) that the outfit known as OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon has had to let all of its staff go because it's out of money. They lost a couple of big-time "funders," they say. They got pretty mouthy about Palestine for a while there; I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Anyway, this is the outift that's always hectoring Tri-Met to make its transit system work better for poor people. That's good, as far as it goes, but they're also partially responsible for the Portland "clean energy" sales tax/slush fund, and they're who brought us Khanh Pham, the far-far-left "Right to Rest" Queen who's now going to be a state senator. And beyond that, they want Tri-Met to not charge fares and not have transit cops. Sound like progress to you? On the whole, I'm not feeling the tears well up at the news of the layoffs.
It's not like the nonprofit industrial complex doesn't have enough car haters to pick up the slack. I assume that Sarah Yada Yada is still cashing, and that Streetcar Smith is still on the scene somewhere. We'll always have the bike children. And for all-purpose alienation of moderate people, nothing beats the radicalized version of the Oregon Food Bank.
Yup - no longer donating to OFB. Those cop-loving folks at the Sunshine Division, who actually put food into the hands of thousands, get my time and money.
ReplyDeleteI'm a member of a men's club. We donated $1.5K/yr to OFB for probably the last 7 years and stopped as well. We're now donating to a smaller program that focuses on students and gives special-needs adults educational opportunities after age 21.
ReplyDeleteThe cop hating crowd in Portland makes the most noise and seems to have the ear of the producer/editors in the local media. I wish the local media respected the way most of us want to live our lives.
