End games

We haven't mailed in our ballots yet. And so today the mailman dropped off eight – count 'em, eight – pieces of election porn. Each one is 8½ by 11 inches of glossy, full-color, double-sided (or four-sided) come-on for a candidate or candidates in the local elections.

They're from Mike Marshall and James Armstrong (a two-fer), Dan Ryan, Sam Adams, Not Rene Gonzalez, the Mother I'd Like to Not Vote For (the fifth mailing she's sent here), the "Portland Voter Guide PAC," and two different cards from Elana Pirtle-Guiney.

Do they think that anybody's reading these things? And if they did read them, that they'd be persuaded by them?

It's all so crazy. But the craziest part is that you and I paid for a lot of it, via the City of Portland campaign subsidies that so many of these candidates get out of our property taxes. It's supposed to keep the corrupting influence of money out of local politics. But given how the candidates scheme to get subsidies that they aren't really entitled to, I'd say corruption is doing just fine.

Anyway, into the recycling they all go. But they were good for a chuckle, as always.

  1. My wife and I returned our ballots at least a week ago, and every time I look in the mailbox we have a fresh crop of this junk for the recycle bin.

It's like they ignore the reports of who hasn't voted yet that they get from the county. Or, don't care about wasting money because it's not their money to begin with.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
