Packing the Court with Gatsby

Breaking news! Senator Ron Wyden (D-sorta Ore.-sorta) has introduced a bill that would add six more justices to the Supreme Court and split the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in two. The bill would also throw out hundreds of years of legal precedent and stipulate that a federal court can't declare a law unconstitutional except by a two-thirds vote of the judges deciding the case.

If any of this sounds bad to you, don't worry. It's coming from Wyden, and if there's one thing for sure, it's that nobody in Congress pays any attention to him.

The funniest part is that he's demanding that the Supreme Court justices make public their tax returns. Have you ever seen Ron Wyden's tax returns? Ha! Ha! No, and you never will. The wimps in the local media won't even ask for them.

    1. All the campaign money goes through him these days. Very dark money.

    2. But back when you could be an (R) and win, old Ron was still untouchable.

    3. Simple, he's been there long enough to become a committee chair / ranking member. And it's a powerful committee (Senate Finance) so it's easy to curry favor (read: donations)

  2. Senator “tax unrealized gains” who reportedly flunked his bar exam 3 times now is leading the “save democracy” party’s efforts to dismantle the independence of our third branch? In the heat of the election season no less? While politics is endlessly unpredictable, Jack speaks for everyone who ever met Wyden when he predicts this gem will go no where……

  3. Ron’s always been a clown. But, he’s our clown.

  4. To save democracy we had to destroy democracy. John Kerry recently said that the 1st amendment is in the way of "managing the truth". Over 44% or so of all Supreme court decisions are unanimous, but cry babies are never satisfied with facts. BTW no matter how many justices you have, Georgetown and Harvard get to decide who they will be.

  5. All of these folks in OR who get hysterical and mess their pants about 6-3 US Supreme Court don’t say a word about the Oregon Court, which is ALL left of center, multiple former public defenders, who all get appointed through the resignation/replacement farce.

  6. That's the most flattering photo of the senior senator from New York that I have seen in years. Well done, Jack.

  8. Twenty-eight years ago Oregon had two open seats for US Senate (Hatfield retired and Packwood canceled himself). No open seat elections since.

The money protects the incumbents. Occasionally purple states switch parties, but this dynamic will not change unless we enact federal term limits.

    1. Term limits is a sensible concept. Which is probably the reason it’ll never happen.
