Money furnace switched off for inspection
I see that they pressed the pause button on the latest platinum-plating of the Portland Airport. Apparently there had been multiple safety lapses in the construction work out there, although the details are being kept under wraps, and the local media apparently can't pry them loose (or maybe, can't be bothered).
Because of the "close calls," they knocked off work for three days and are no longer racing toward a late May opening of the new Shangri-La. They're not forecasting a new opening date yet, but it sounds like it's going to be more than three days after the originally scheduled grand shindig.
Do you get the feeling they're hiding something?
Anyway, the day after they finally cut the ribbon, they can start all over. The billions never stop flowing.
If only all that tax revenue were being spent to save the city to which the airport is a gateway. I know, I know, spare me the Vera Katz "colors of money" speech, they can't use it for anything the city actually needs. But do you think they could spray a little of it toward, oh I don't know, stopping the rash of car thefts and prowls in the airport parking lots?
Maybe the superglue was taking longer than expected to bond, and the contractors arms were getting tired from holding it up and they didn’t want to miss their breaks? Is plausible.
ReplyDeleteI heard they are using Flex Seal -
DeleteMayra Arreola (Port of Portland's Chief Shared Prosperity Officer) saw the commercial and thought it would work perfectly.

ReplyDeleteManagement of the airport’s remodel is not as complicated as the Columbia Crossing project. I can hardly wait for that debacle to begin.
ReplyDeleteRumor I’ve heard in the construction biz is that there have been some pretty serious injuries happening during the project, and especially this winter. Part of the problem is the design and methods being used to attain that design.
ReplyDeleteThe airport is funded by fees charged to the tenants including airlines and concessions vendor not property taxes. There were safety near misses but no injuries yet.
ReplyDeleteI believe there is also substantial funding from the federal government, out of ticket taxes. The Port has a property tax, too, but they don't need it for the cash cow airport. That's for other pork.
