The War on Drugs resumes
Oregon is starting to come to its senses about the need to have the criminal justice system as a backup to whatever plans there are to treat drug addiction. The state legislature just decided that fentanyl isn't going to get the free pass that heroin, meth, and cocaine get under the hopelessly foolish Measure 110. Presumably T. Kohoutek will sign the passed bill into law quickly.
HB 2645 establishes a misdemeanor penalty for fentanyl and describes unit measurements for calculating offenses. The bill makes it a misdemeanor to possess 1 gram of “a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl” or five “user units” of a drug that contains a detectable amount of fentanyl.
And in Portland, where it's illegal even to sip a Coors Light on the street or in the park, it will soon also be illegal to smoke blues or shoot up in public. Gosh, you would have thought that was already the law, but apparently not. I guess the arrogantsia in the city attorney's office have been too busy with other things.
Specifically, the ban would apply to public property, streets, sidewalks or on the public right-of-way. Violations would be punishable by fines of up to $500 or up to six months in jail, to be determined by the courts.
Will the cops enforce the new rules? And when they do, will the Boy Wonder district attorney prosecute those arrested? And if he does, will the perps actually get tried, or will they be released because there are no public defenders? And if they're convicted, will they be handed meaningful sentences?
It's all very iffy, but at least it's retracting the bad message Oregon has been sending out to the losers of the country, which up until now has been: Anything goes here.
An important footnote before leaving this topic: The only "no" vote in either house on the fentanyl law was that crazy Rep. Farrah Chaichi from Beaverton. You may recall that she was one of the geniuses behind the "right to rest" bill that would have let the junkies set up tent camps in public places anywhere, any time. Where do they find these people? Beaverton, what the hey?
UPDATE, the next day: Little, if any, of this post turns out to be true. Update here.
Portland public officials went through a period of insanity in 2016-2022. They supported Antifa & "Black Lives Matter" rioters destroying the city, looting shops, tearing down statues, attacking courthouses, smashing windows, invading museums, besieging government buildings, assaulting citizens and police. Portland has not recovered from this orgy of leftwing violence, arson, lawlessness, and vandalism. DA Mike Schmidt declined to prosecute these terrorists, because he agreed with their horribly destructrive leftist ideology. Those same public officials are still in power. They should have been tossed out of office long ago, for their failure to protect Portland from the lawless hordes of druggie trash.
ReplyDeleteI think it began before the turn of the century.
DeleteAntifa is the paramilitary arm of the Democrat Party. I cannot understand why it has not been crushed other than it is the paramilitary arm . . . . BLM is . . . well he who has eyes to see and ears to hear knows what BLM is.
