You can't do that

Oregon's secretary of state, Shemia Fagan, just stepped into a huge hole, and I don't know that she'll be able to climb out. She's decided to become a paid consultant on the side, and she's now repping for a weed company that's been in the news lately for not paying its taxes.

The media is making a big deal out of who her client is, but honestly, Fagan shouldn't be moonlighting as a consultant to anybody. It may be legal, but it's political suicide.

If her flimsy official salary isn't enough, she shouldn't have run for the office. Her life is about to get a lot more complicated, and not in a good way. She isn't going to be able to talk her way out of it.

Fagan's reportedly also applied to reactivate her law license; maybe she's decided to leave politics for a while. After today's news, that may not be an entirely voluntary move.

  1. And we’re also to believe Oregon elections are squeaky clean, too? Nothing to see here, folks.

    1. Several recent Republican secretaries of state said so, yes. I’m inclined to believe them, absent actual credible evidence to the contrary.

  2. The public employee unions went to the mattresses for her over Hass. I wonder who they'll tell Kotek to nominate in her stead.

    1. PERS and insurance coverage dictate she lasts until Monday, unless she's able to negotiate something this evening.

    1. care to explain the softball? I believe they have reported what they know so far. Are you suggesting they know more? If so, please provide proof. Otherwise, you are simply parroting bogus talking points.

  4. But, also, why does our Secretary of State make $77k? Not exactly a professional wage anymore…

  5. I'll betcha La Mota is Shemia's only client. It'd be hilarious if BOLI used that info to classify Shemia as a La Mota employee rather than an independent contractor.

  6. If her moonlighting means she has to recuse herself from major audits, then it's pretty clear her extracurricular activities are interfering with her ability to do her job as Secretary of State.

    1. There's a lot troubling to this story, but this aspect is what underscores to me what a boneheaded decision this was. If you realize you need to recuse yourself from one of the official duties of the office you were elected to in order to pick up a side gig, it's obvious you're doing the wrong thing!

    2. If you’re not “all in” for a political gig. You shouldn’t be there.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
