Breaking news: The can has been kicked
Here's some classic Portland for ya. The folks at the Weed decided to single out one of the Menashes' properties downtown as the supposed epicenter of the fentanyl crisis, and so today the cops spent all morning and every available cop sweeping it out. The owners say they're going to put up a fence.
Oh, and how many drug dealers were arrested? Ha! Ha! That would be zero, Bob.
And so the problem has been moved down the street, at least for a while. Let's all pat ourselves on the back. Dud Wheeler, the kids at the Weed, the cops – well, bully for us. The open-air fentanyl market is closed!
Well, the white-people one is closed. I'll bet Dawson Park is still open.
With the willing coverage of the local media, it makes the bureaucracy look active
ReplyDeleteNot saying the problem is solved, by a long shot, but the WW story yesterday on the first wave of enforcement talked about arrests. "Among the arrests: a man with several bags of pills in “just about every pocket” and “lots and lots of cash,” says Sgt. Susan Billard, who staked out the building earlier this week."
ReplyDeleteUnless he had a *lot*, Multnomah County court rules require catch-and-release.
DeleteJust heard on KOIN that the City was requiring a rather complicated permitting process to “board up the building” and “put up fencing”. Also Menashe has been employing private security.
ReplyDeleteThe fire and police went into the building using battering rams…
Why didn’t they just get the keys from the owners? Portland is SO screwed!
"...complicated permitting process to “board up the building” and “put up fencing”. Well of course we wouldn't want an eyesore.
DeleteBetter to have a drug mart!
DeleteActually, the ordering is done on the phone now. This was just the Domino's delivery spot.
DeleteThe police intelligence on the Portland drug culture exists. It’s sad that the handcuffs are on the wrong side.
