Welcome to the "Trump judge" era
It was a bad day yesterday. A federal judge issued a wacky ruling that the federal government doesn't have the authority to tell you you have to wear a mask on an airplane during a global pandemic.
It is only a matter of time before one of them says the same thing about the feds telling you you can't bring your loaded gun on board.
As dumb and dangerous as the ruling may have been on the merits, it's doubly sad in that everyone immediately noted that the judge was one of the "not qualified" Federalist Society drones placed on the federal bench by Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and Ted Cruz.
Judge Mizelle is one of those folks that the Federalist Society sent up the pneumatic tube that led from its labs to the White House. She clerked for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and was rated as “not qualified” by the American Bar Association. She was 33 when she was nominated and confirmed as the 2020 lame-duck session was winding down. She was eight years out of law school and had never tried a case of any kind. Her husband was chosen to be acting general counsel at the Department of Homeland Security through his connection to that noted devotee of the Constitution, Stephen Miller. She had no experience, but she had the golden resume.
For the next several decades – if the United States lasts that long – whenever you read about the rulings of a federal judge, there'll be a figurative asterisk if it came from a "Trump judge." Depending on your party, that will tell you whether the ruling is legitimate.
And with that, ladies and gentlemen, the judicial branch of American government, once the envy of the world, has been hopelessly trashed. The money and effort Putin has put into crushing our nation's family jewels has been well spent.
Just as sad is the fact that the Democrats will let the judge's ruling take effect. Don't expect wimps llike Biden, Garland, Schumer, and Wyden to stand up to anyone. They let the Trump goons trample over the country's institutions, time and time again. Moscow Mitch eats their lunch every single day.
Something to think about as you fly the Covid-y skies over our troubled land.
Thanks for this piece. Good to know as I move east for law school.
ReplyDeleteNVM pandemic, it's prolly not the worst idea to wear a gasketed tight fitting mask in a crowd like Asians have been doing for ~20+ years, especially in one of those sardine cans / pressurized recycled air disease vector tubes?
ReplyDeleteIDK on mandate or not mandate, Americans under duress w/aviation deregulation hell-scape are uh...already probably not in the best of moods in the bull/cow corrale. The beatings will continue, regardless of morale?
That poor bastid doctor on United who got his teeth knocked out & dragged off the plane?
Drunken, disgruntled americans abusing flight attendants?
Sure glad not to have any urgent need to fly & all elderly relatives back east/distant are mostly dead &/or already moved in with a family member somewhere relatively 'safe' (as far as can be determined).
IDK about Russia or not, it's world wide military-industrial / Corporatocracy all around, no?
