Didn't get the gig

I noted with some concern a few weeks ago that Portland's no. 2 police official, Chris Davis, was a finalist for the chief's job in Akron, Ohio. Several readers pointed out that his departure would be a great loss for Portland.

Well, Akron gave the job to a guy from Bellevue, Washington.

Apparently this wasn't first time Davis has applied for a chief's position, however. It sounds like he wouldn't mind moving up and moving out of our crazy city. He's not alone in that regard. I have many friends who have reported with glee that they're bailing, or have already bailed, on Portland. They're in Canby, Woodburn – one couple's even moving to Finland.

Anyway, if Davis is as good as they say he is, it's good that he's staying put for a while.
