Gatsby gets an extension

Yesterday wasn't just Tax Day. It was the due date for federal politicians to disclose their finances. The President and Vice President got theirs in on time, to much hoopla. But the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Ron Wyden ("D"-"Oregon"), filed for a three-month extension.

The request is not a surprise. Wyden's spouse, Nancy Bass Wyden, has been playing the stock market pretty furiously over the last year, and she's got quite a few individual stocks that need to be tracked down.

One document filed by Mr. Wyden on April 30 shows that Ms. Wyden sold off the last of her stock in Applied Materials and KLA Corporation on April 16. She had between $50,000 and $100,000 worth of each company immediately before the sale. She made a killing on both stocks, but her final sales were at somewhat lower prices than when she did much larger cash-outs just 10 days earlier.

On the day Wyden sold out of the last of Applied Materials, the high price was $134.74 and the low was $133.01. When she had bought the stock in 2020, the price range was around $45 to $60.

On the day Wyden sold out of the last of KLA, the high price was $339.86 and the low was $332.98. When she had bought the stock in 2020, the price range was around $135 to $200.

But there's a new stock in the Wyden portfoilio, purchased on April 1 though not disclosed until April 30. It's Match Group, Inc. Ms. Wyden bought between $15,000 and $50,000 worth. Yahoo describes the company this way:

Match Group is a provider of online dating products. The firm became public in 2015 and was more than 80% owned by IAC/InterActiveCorp until IAC spun it off in second-quarter 2020. The company has a vast portfolio of different online dating service providers, including Tinder, Match.com, OkCupid, PlentyOfFish, and Meetic. Match Group has more than 45 brands of online dating sites and/or apps, from which it generates user fee revenue (95%) and advertising revenue (5%).

Ms. Wyden has swiped right on tech stocks many times before. But if you want to see the complete list all in one place, you'll have to wait at least another three months. And even then, you'll see where they were at the end of last year.
